In what seems as a move to decentralize and democratize grassroots governance in order to boost the third tier system of government, Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano has inaugurated a five-man Local Government Service Commission to run the affairs of local government system in the State.
The five-member Commission which is made up of three males and two females comprise Dr. Peter Egenti as Chairman, while the other members are Chief Austin Anyaeji, Mr. Ugochukwu Ezeani, Mrs. Rosaline Ifezulike, and Mrs Uju Okeke.
Speaking at the Inauguration Ceremony at Governor’s Lodge Awka late Wednesday, Chief Willie Obiano charged members of the Local Government Service Commission to inject life into the management of local government system, and reminded them that they were selected based on their pedigree. Stressing the importance of the task before the Commission, Governor Obiano said,” you are charged to bring your wealth of experience to bear in the performance of the onerous task of making sure that the local government system works effectively by injecting new life in the system, and ensure fairness in the discharge of your responsibilities.”
Responding, on behalf of other members, the Commission’s Chairman, Dr. Egenti assured that they would justify the confidence and trust reposed on them and thanked the Governor for finding them worthy of the assignment.
In his reaction, the State President of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Comrade Jerry Nubia expressed satisfaction with the reconstitution of the body which he noted would now attend to affairs of local government workers to strengthen the system. He also commended Governor Obiano for choosing people with proven integrity and huge wealth of experience to handle the affairs of the Commission and urged workers to give them all the necessary cooperation.
