Yuletide: Obiano Tightens Security with Operation Sheba

After establishing himself firmly on top of the security scenario in Anambra State as the chief security officer of the state, Governor Willie Obiano has initiated a wave of new measures to deepen the security network in the state and give Ndi Anambra a chance at experiencing the first crime-free Christmas in decades. One of the new security measures that the governor has rolled out for a safer Anambra this Yuletide Season is Operation Sheba, a special, combat-ready, anti-crime police squad that was unveiled recently in Onitsha to give a new dimension to crime-fighting in Anambra State.

Made up of 150 elite officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force, Operation Sheba was introduced to give crime-bursting in Anambra State a new and biting edge. The squad is split into three units of 50 officers each, designated to 24 hours surveillance on each of the three senatorial districts of the state. Operation Sheba comes to provide more depth to the all-conquering Operation Kpochapu which is credited with wiping out criminals, especially kidnappers from Anambra State in less than two months of swinging into action. Operation Sheba’s strength lies in its high mobility and penetrating surveillance that covers virtually the length and breadth of Anambra State and its rapid response ability.

OBIANO AND THE CHALLENGE OF GROWING APGA

It is remarkable that in the course of the recent bashing of the All Progressives Grand Alliance by some defecting, notable members of the party and other sundry detractors, Anambra State Governor and by extension, leader of the party, Chief Willie Obiano, largely stood aloof from the fray. It seemed the case that Obiano chose not to utter a word over the altercations in recognition of the need to play the statesman and diffuse the gathering tension. With the benefit of hindsight however, there can be little doubt that aside from prudence, and the business of delivering good governance, the Governor was rather preoccupied with how to grow the party and take it to higher levels. As the foremost public office holder elected on the ticket of the party, it naturally devolved on him to take the lead in harnessing the potentials of the organization.  This resolve to assume the historic responsibility of fulfilling the mission of APGA is evident in certain occurrences in the party. The recent declaration for the party by the immediate past Managing Director of Diamond Bank Plc, Dr Alex Otti is a significant development.

Coming at a time critics have been unrelenting in their negative portrayal of the party, the decision of Otti to join APGA just like the earlier case of Emmanuel Iheanacho, former Minister of Interior, indicates that the public perception of APGA has not changed despite the spirited attempts to run down its image.  With people of such stature as Otti and Iheanacho embracing APGA at times like this, it means that the defining values of the party are still intact and perhaps, being better nourished.  Whichever way we look at it, increasing party membership, more so, of the enlightened and elite cadre at a supposed time of crisis, connotes a vote of confidence on the leadership of the party.

As Obiano’s Magic Touch Spreads to APGA…

Michelangelo, the most famous artist of the Italian Renaissance once said that the “the greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.” Two important events in Anambra State last week remind us, in vivid colours, of the dangers of low aim. They are - the visit of Dr. Alex Otti, former CEO of Diamond Bank Plc, who had picked the APGA gubernatorial form for Abia State the previous day and the defection of about 4000 members of APC in Anambra State to APGA.

Coming fast on the heels of the recent emergence of Chief Willie Obiano, governor of Anambra State, as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) and Leader of APGA, the two events speak to the clarity of vision that informed the choice of Governor Obiano as the party leader. Perhaps nothing could have spoken louder about the party’s obvious low aim in the past than the near instantaneous rush of hope that Obiano’s new leadership has fueled, leading to the two great events under review. For a while APGA had seemed content with its narrow canvass, straining against the leash of a leadership that obviously lacked the inspirational leadership to attract people of note in the region where it is supposed to have its strongest roots. But with the entry of Dr. Alex Otti, a thoroughgoing technocrat with a towering reputation for excellence in the nation’s private sector, APGA looks sure enough to reclaim the promise it once held for Ndigbo by offering a credible alternative to Ndi Abia; a great sub-sect of the larger Igbo nation whose known capacity for greatness seems to have been stultified for years by bad leadership. It is this low aim that Alex Otti has obviously come to change…

Obiano Repositions Anambra as Investment Hub, Attracts $520m in one Week

The efforts of Governor Willie Obiano to reposition Anambra State as the new investment hub in West Africa are beginning to yield amazing results as the state attracted a whopping $520m investment in the outgone week. The investments came largely into the two key areas that make up the governor’s Four Pillars of Development, namely Agriculture and Trade and Commerce. The other two Pillars are Industrialization and Oil & Gas.

What is currently looking like Anambra’s day in the investment sun began at midweek with a tripartite agreement which the state government signed with the management of Delfarm Limited and Songhai Regional Centre from Benin Republic for specific agricultural projects valued at $200m (about N15bn). This was followed up at the weekend with another agreement with a consortium known as the West Africa Intercontinental Trade Centre Ltd which signed for the construction of an International Modern Market to be located in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area at an estimated value of $320m for the first phase of the project.
