Obiano Moves to Enforce City Master-plan in Anambra; Pulls Down Illegal Structures

The Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has made a bold move to halt the spate of indiscriminate erection of buildings in the state, ordering that some structures cited in unauthorized places in the 3-3 Area of Onitsha be pulled down at the weekend. Some illegal structures and perimeter fences built on government land, very close to the road were affected in the exercise.

Irked by the spate of brazen erection of structures in locations that violate the original master plan of the three major cities in the state, Awka, Onitsha and Nnewi, Governor Obiano had moved swiftly to restore sanity and halt the prevailing trend of developers playing to the gallery in total disregard of the approved plan for urban development and renewal in Anambra State.

The newly inaugurated governor expressed disappointment that some citizens of the state had taken it upon themselves to test the resolve of the government on some grey areas of governance and warned that his administration would not hesitate to enforce relevant laws that would engender sanity and order in the state.

The governor wondered how anyone could embark on a real estate development spree in the state without paying attention to global best practices; like the city master-plan and right of way.
Sending a strong signal to land speculators and property developers in the state, the Governor stated,” my administration will not tolerate flagrant violation of the law and any encroachment on government property by anybody irrespective of their social status. People should learn to obey the laws of the land by complying with the guidelines on urban development.” Obiano reiterated.

According to him, the owners of the demolished structures were given enough time and notice to make amends but they chose to disobey the directive perhaps with a view to test the resolve of the government. He warned speculators to steer clear of government properties because they would be held accountable, stressing that those who do the right thing had nothing to fear.

Recently at the popular Upper Iweka axis in Onitsha, some illegal structures built by a transporter at a government Recreation Park were dismantled on the orders of the Governor.
